Stalking

What is Stalking?

Stalking is more than just unwanted attention -it’s a pattern of behaviour that can leave someone feeling scared, anxious, or unsafe. It often involves repeated contact, following, monitoring, or other intrusive actions that feel fixated or obsessive.
A helpful way to remember the signs is the acronym FOUR:

  • Fixated
  • Obsessive
  • Unwanted
  • Repeated

If someone’s behaviour makes you feel uncomfortable or threatened, it could be stalking-support is available.

What is a Stalking Protection Order (SPO)?

A Stalking Protection Order (SPO) is a legal measure designed to protect people from stalking before things escalate. It can be used even if the person hasn’t been convicted of a crime.
An SPO can:

  • Stop someone from contacting or approaching you.
  • Require them to take actions like attending support programmes. There are two types:
    • Interim SPOs – used quickly when there’s an immediate concern.
    • Full SPOs – used when there’s enough evidence to meet the legal threshold.

Who Can Be Protected?

You don’t have to be the direct victim of stalking to be protected by an SPO. If someone’s behaviour poses a risk to you or others, the police can apply for an order to keep you safe — even without your consent, if necessary.
