Course description

This course looks at identifying domestic violence perpetrators, giving safe messages and making appropriate referrals upon identification. It will also explore theoretical perspectives around domestic violence, the links to substance misuse and the perpetrator's choice to use violence.

Learning objectives

  • To gain a basic understanding of domestic violence and the links to substance use
  • To understand why and how violence and abuse are used
  • To gain skills to identify perpetrators and give safe messages regarding the cause of their violence
  • To learn about perpetrator programmes from practitioners working in this field
  • To learn how to improve your agency's response to domestic violence.

Who should attend?

Ideal for drug and alcohol workers who wish to develop their skills to address domestic violence perpetration by their clients.

This course will help develop the skills and knowledge to support the following DANOS units:

AB3 - Contribute to the prevention and management of abusive and aggressive behaviour

HSC335 - Contribute to the protection of individuals from abuse

HSC395 - Contribute to assessing and act upon risk of danger, harm and abuse

HSC33 - Reflect on and develop your practice

AG3 - Assist in the transfer of individuals between agencies and services

AJ1 - Help individuals address their offending behaviour

AJ2 - Enable individuals to change their offending behaviour
